About the program

An internship with Ashland is an opportunity to begin to learn the business of technical sales and service by working closely with highly skilled Ashland sales representatives. It is an opportunity to learn about the paper industry, problem solving and project management. Each intern will be assigned important projects to manage, which will include sales planning, analytical testing/interpretation and customer interface. This allows the intern to fully experience a number of aspects of the technical sales career with Ashland. In addition, the interns are evaluated by Ashland as a majority of our entry- level new hires come from the intern program. An internship with Ashland is a great way to gain valuable experience in the chemical and paper industry, develop real world skills and position yourself for a rewarding career.

Sales Intern Job Description

The intern position is responsible for assisting Ashland personnel with troubleshooting, problem solving and continuous improvement associated with all technology supplied to the pulp and paper industry. This technology is utilized to enhance the unit operations associated with energy generation, water treatment and, pulping and papermaking processes. In addition, Ashland supplies technology and services associated with the functionality and performance of paper. This involves projects associated with Ashland technology, value, support for existing programs, investigation of new opportunities and development of customer relationships.

As a result of the work experience, the successful candidate will learn more about the papermaking process, consultative sales, technical problem solving, laboratory techniques and chemical delivery equipment. The intern will work closely with Ashland personnel at the customer mill sites. Much of the work will be in a hands-on industrial environment with a combination of project work and technical support activities.

Responsibilities may include:

• Planning and execution of new applications evaluations.
• Provide service and technical support for our paper producing customers.
• Troubleshoot and solve problems for customers.
• Work with the sales team to identify new business opportunities.
• Grow business through new sales.

Qualifications

• Commitment to work safely and provide excellent customer service.
• BS in Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper, Chemistry or equivalent.
• Prior experience with Pulp and Paper or Heavy Industry is preferred.
• Ability to work individually and with the team.
• The candidate must possess excellent communication, analytical and problem solving skills.
• The ability to speak English along with excellent interpersonal skills is necessary for this position.
• Candidates should have access to a car they can use during their internship.

Compensation

The amount of pay that our interns receive is determined by annual compensation studies to insure that you are receiving a fair market offer based on your major and progress towards graduation. You will also receive $450/month to assist with your housing costs. In addition, Ashland will pay for the mileage from your home/school to your internship location at the beginning of the internship and back at the end. This will be paid at the current federal mileage rate ($0.585/mile for 2008). Also, lodging and food costs will be covered when traveling from campus/home to our site/customer mill and return after internship is completed. We do not pay for moving vans or rental cars for Interns.

We do not pay for your mileage from your summer/temporary residence to your primary place of work. However, if during the summer you are asked to visit other mills to cover a trial or even for normal service, you will be compensated for the miles driven during those trips and for food and lodging that might be necessary.

Also, we make available an advance for you at the beginning of your internship to assist with costs of transitioning from school to summer life. (Note, if you elect to receive the advance, the amount of the advance and taxes will come from your first two full paychecks.)
